Appointees

Dealing with a person’s benefits as an official Appointee

If you wish to apply to deal with a person’s benefits, but you do not need to deal with their other affairs, you may not need to be their Attorney.

If a loved one is severely disabled or not mentally capable of dealing with their own benefits, you can apply instead to be their Appointee – this means that you are appointed by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to deal only with certain benefits.

A person can be appointed to deal with Attendance Allowance, State Pension payments, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and other benefits.  The responsibilities of Appointee include signing for benefits, receiving them and spending them (in the best interests of your loved one, of course).

Applications, assessments and interviews must be carried out by the DWP before Appointments are made.  Here at Castle Family Legal, we are able to advise you of who to contact, the steps in the process and also assist you with completing the relevant paperwork.
